While Marlene is the design expert on the Casa Latina team – with her unique sense of style and eye for creating an amazing looking space – I do like to get in the style game from time to time. Especially if I find something interesting and that might appeal to other novices like myself.
So when our friends at Sure Fit offered up some tips on how-to mix patterns and color palettes to create a cohesive look, I thought why not? I tend to be a bit conservative in my design style for the simple reason that I’m afraid to make a mistake. But mixing colors, patterns and textures in ways that POP can make for an exciting space. And I’ve always been a fan of slipcovers. They offer a great way to change up the look of a space in a very practical and inexpensive way.
No need for a new sofa, just find a fun, funky new slipcover and you are good to go for awhile!
To keep the look cohesive, use patterns from the same color family and vary their scale. Keeping within the same color hue allows you the ability to mix almost any pattern you love.
Mix unthinkable patterns, as seen here in this photo from Better Homes and Gardens. Floral pillows in various sizes and check chair within the same color palette.
Plaids mixed with solids, keeping the decor subtle yet connected with a neutral cocoa hue. (Shown: Soft Suede Plaid One Piece on the sofa and Cotton Duck One Piece on the chair with a mix of each fabric on the pillows)
