El amor de una madre es universal y las maneras de honrarla el Día de la Madre son prácticamente infinitas. En reconocimiento a las celebraciones que se avecinan para el Día de la Madre en todo el mundo, The Western Union Company (NYSE: WU) rendirá homenaje a Beatriz Gamba de 72 años, originaria de Colombia y residente actual de Boston, Massachusetts, como Madre del Año 2009 de Western Union.

Rodrigo Gamba de 49 años de edad, primer sargento de la Fuerza Aérea de los Estados Unidos, basado en Peoria, Illinois, relató en su entrada de participación para el concurso Madre del Año 2009 de Western Union la forma en que su madre lo había criado a él, a su hermana y a su hermano con discapacidades mentales, y cómo había hecho grandes sacrificios por asegurar, a pesar de la humilde procedencia de la familia, que tuvieran una mejor vida.

“El amor y la devoción de mi madre la convierte en la mujer y la madre más increíble que conozco —expresa Gamba—. Sufrió y perseveró ante obstáculos insuperables para que mi hermana y yo pudiéramos convertirnos en lo que somos hoy: somos testimonio vivo de su legado. Siempre insistió en que sus hijos debían educarse y tener las oportunidades que ella no tuvo”.

La reconocida personalidad hispana de televisión, Ana María Canseco, participó en el panel de jueces que seleccionó la entrada de Rodrigo Gamba como ganadora del concurso Madre del Año.

“La historia de Beatriz representa la lucha y los sacrificios de muchas de nuestras madres hispanas —dice Ana María Canseco—. Espero que el dinero de este premio ayude a cumplir los sueños de Rodrigo y su familia, y que este Día de la Madre sea inolvidable para Beatriz”.

La familia Gamba se reunirá con Fonseca, cantautor y ganador de un Latin Grammy, hoy a las 3 p.m. en el teatro El Rey, donde Western Union presentará el concierto Gratitour de Fonseca esta misma noche.

In recognition of the upcoming Mother’s Day celebrations throughout the world, The Western Union is honoring Beatriz Gamba, 72, a native of Colombia who lives in Boston, Mass. as the 2009 Western Union Mother of the Year.

Rodrigo Gamba, 49, a U.S. Air Force chief master sergeant stationed in Peoria, Illinois, explained in his Western Union Mother of the Year Contest entry how his mother raised him, his sister and a mentally disabled brother, making great sacrifices to ensure that in spite of their humble beginnings they would have a better life.

“My mother’s love and devotion makes her the most amazing woman and mother I know,” said Gamba. “She suffered and persevered through insurmountable obstacles to make my sister and I who we are today; a testimony to her. She insisted that her children be educated and have the opportunities unavailable to her.”

Hispanic TV personality Ana Maria Canseco served on the panel of judges that selected Rodrigo Gamba’s entry as the Mother of the Year Contest winner.

“Beatriz’ story represents the struggles and sacrifices of many of our Hispanic mothers,” said Ana Maria Canseco. “I hope this prize money helps fulfill the dreams of both Rodrigo and his family, and that this Mother’s Day is unforgettable for Beatriz.”

Hispanic cultures are traditionally matriarchal and mothers are honored every day of the year. However, Mother’s Day is a special day of reverence for Latino families. In recognition of Mother’s Day, Western Union is honoring a Mother of the Year and awarding one lucky winner $50,000 cash.
